What were some of the problems you faced producing your first issue?I had some troubles here and there, but the major thing was getting advertisers involved. A lot of people weren't really sure of what I was doing and when I said "I'm starting a new, free, art & surf magazine, they were like... what??" I think I caught everyone by surprise when the first issue was a success. Now more companies and people are more interested and involved.
How did you approach advertising sales on your first issue? The first thing I did was found my demographics and set up rates, deadlines, and everything seen on a media kit. I can't even count how many hours I spent driving around town and on the phone trying to get meetings with people who could actually make decisions about advertising. It was tough, but it definitely paid off because I built good relationships in that time, and it made it easier for this second issue. I had my contacts and info ready to go, and have been very successful with advertising this time around.
After this first issue, how do you plan on having more people help with your publication, or will you stay solo?Well, I just sent the second issue off to print and that should be out by April 4th. I did that one alone and am already printing 2,000 more copies than I did for the first issue. I want to expand, so I am getting another partner to help out with articles, advertising, basically everything. I have big plans and know that the only way to do that is get some help!
