Distribution and Hurdles
Where will boomer be distributed?
We will distribute to baby boomer homeowners living in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee. It’s our hope that a large number of our initial recipients of the magazine who receive it for no charge will want to subscribe long-term. We have been blessed to sign some significant retail distribution contracts with several national and regional outlets. It’s imperative that you form relationships with the retail outlets that are prospects for selling your title. Our digital edition is also a very valuable distribution tool.

What hurdles have you experienced leading up to and through publication of your first issue?
I think it's safe to say that getting the word out about your publication and overcoming the “new title” stigma are both huge hurdles. Because we look to capture national/regional advertisers, we fight the battle of making ourselves known to advertising agencies all across the country who represent many of the largest companies in the world. You must have a solid media kit and be knowledgeable about your publication from every aspect – ad prices, editorial, etc. We actually produced a sample magazine to go along with our initial distribution of media kits. This was really helpful for agencies and companies to see what they could expect from us.

Our first publication came out really nice, and we had some great support from a wide range of advertisers. Of course, everyone wants more advertisers! But, we are being careful about overloading boomer with advertising. We’re committed to keeping our editorial to advertising ratio at around 60/40. Too many magazines give you ad after ad before you get to any editorial. That won’t be the case in boomer.
